BSBA Approaches & Examples

BSBA

Introduction

Auburn University Harbert College of Business

The Harbert College of Business partnered with the Biggio Center and Auburn Online Links to an external site. to build an online, asynchronous option for the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) program.

The online Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) program is a convenient way for students to finish their degree in two years. As a degree completer program, the BSBA Online is built for students who have already earned credits towards their degree but are looking to transfer into the ease and flexibility of distance learning.

BSBA Approaches and Framework

As the BSBA program is intended to provide high-quality education to (primarily) non-traditional students, Auburn Online critically evaluated and redesigned academic courses to meet the needs of adult learners.

Although these redesigned online asynchronous courses are available and appropriate for traditional (i.e. on-campus/undergraduate) students, they have been purposefully designed to:

  1. Meet the unique needs of non-traditional learners.
  2. Increase student engagement with instructors, course material, and cohort peers.

Canvas Orientation Course

To support student success, Auburn Online developed and built a Canvas Orientation Course designed to familiarize students with Canvas LMS features and navigation prior to entering program courses. The orientation course serves two purposes:

  1. Provide students with a broad-scale "how-to" guide so they are comfortable navigating and interacting with Canvas LMS at the onset of their program.
  2. Provide students with a comprehensive "self-help" resource and "troubleshooting" guide throughout the duration of their program enrollment.

This self-paced course offers an overview guide of how to navigate Canvas and engage in Canvas-based communication, comprehensive task analysis breakdowns of how to access various of course content delivery features (modules, files, recorded lectures, etc.), and procedures for how to participate in and submit Canvas-based coursework (assignments, discussion boards, exams/quizzes, etc.).

Courses Offered

The BSBA online completer program offers 22 courses.  This document Download document shows the schedule of course offerings through 2025.

Implementation

The Online BSBA program has a few key features that make it unique from other online degree programs.

  • In order to help online students feel connected with the Auburn campus, each course requires an Auburn Creed assignment
  • For consistency, each class operates under a 1000 points scale
  • This program has a unique grade schema where C is 73-80
  • Updated design templates are currently being implemented

Best Practices and Examples

Auburn Online has two studios available for instructors to use.  The "Learning Glass" studio is designed create engaging and interactive videos.

The "Talking Heads" studio is great for module intro videos or explaining concepts that don't require visuals.

It is possible to successfully incorporate project based learning into asynchronous online courses.  Take a look at these two examples:

Interactive elements keep students engaged with concepts on the page and are a great way to incorporate formative assessment into your course.

Each course in the program should have an Auburn Creed assignment.  There are a variety of ways this can be incorporated - discussion posts, writing assignment, video response, case studies, etc.  Below are two examples:

Ensuring Future Success

The BSBA program incorporates ongoing Maintenance and Revision (M&R) services for each course within the program suite. While the overarching goal is to increase course quality and bolster student satisfaction and success, each year of M&R focuses in on assessing and providing specific improvements. M&R service activities occur after a course semester has concluded and are typically complete before the course launches for the next student cohort. Additionally, course instructors are provided with technical and pedagogical support from Auburn Online throughout the instructional term for each year of M&R.

There are certain services that are offered each time a course relaunches. A meeting is scheduled with faculty during which the Instructional Designer offers to complete relaunch tasks for faculty, guide them through together, or faculty can opt to complete tasks on their own

These include:

  • Copying course content from Master template to live course shell where students are enrolled
  • Integrating external tools and resources such as publisher systems
  • Modify Due Dates for all modules and assignments
  • Verify Textbook/All Access to be included
  • Validate all course links
  • Recheck course accessibility
  • Realign syllabus and grade weights with any modifications that may have been made
  • Update grading schema if necessary
  • Setup online proctoring if necessary
  • Review revisions with faculty (as needed)
